COMPETITIVE DANCE AT CENTER STAGE DANCE:

Spotlight Dance Company

Spotlight Dance Company is Center Stage’s performance and competition program for dancers who want more opportunities to train, perform, and grow together. Spotlight dancers perform in our Winter Show and attend three regional competitions each spring, giving them additional opportunities to take the stage throughout the season.

But we’ll be the first to admit it: competition might be our least favorite thing about dance.

We’ve seen what can happen when scores, placements, and trophies become too important. Dancers start comparing themselves to each other. Success becomes a number or an award, and something that started because they loved to dance can slowly become about being better than the person standing next to them

.

We want Spotlight to be different

At Center Stage, competition is simply another opportunity to perform. It gives our dancers something to work toward together, encourages them to challenge themselves, and lets them experience new stages alongside people who support them. It also gives them the chance to meet dancers from other studios, watch their work, cheer them on, and celebrate great dancing no matter whose studio it comes from.

We compete, but we work hard to keep the focus where we believe it belongs: on the dancer, the work, the community, and the joy of performing.

Winning can be exciting. A great score can feel amazing. But neither one determines whether a dancer had a successful weekend, and they certainly don’t determine their worth as a dancer.

What Does Spotlight Look Like?

Keep Training
Spotlight dancers are required to take Ballet each week, but outside of that, they’re free to choose the regular weekly classes that interest them. Spotlight rehearsals are held on Saturdays and focus specifically on choreography for their performance and competition numbers.

Start With the Winter Show
Beginning in August, Saturday rehearsals focus on choreography for Center Stage’s Winter Show, giving dancers a performance to work toward together during the first half of the season.

Start Fresh in January
After the Winter Show, we turn the page. January brings brand-new choreography as Spotlight begins preparing for competition season. Rather than spending the entire year on the same dances, our dancers get the experience and challenge of learning new work.

Competition Season
Each spring, Spotlight attends three regional dance competitions where dancers get to take their new choreography to the stage and experience performing in a completely different environment.

Grow Together
Spotlight is about more than learning choreography. Dancers learn responsibility, teamwork, resilience, and what it means to show up for the people counting on them.

Who Can Join Spotlight?

Spotlight is open to dancers ages 7 and up who are ready for additional performance opportunities and the commitment that comes with being part of a company. Dancers audition for Spotlight each season, but we aren’t looking for perfection. We’re looking for dancers who are ready to work hard, learn, grow, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

All Spotlight dancers are required to take Ballet each week in addition to their Saturday Spotlight rehearsals. Outside of Ballet, dancers can choose the regular weekly classes and styles that interest them.

Being part of Spotlight means being part of a group that depends on you. Regular attendance at Saturday rehearsals is important because every dancer plays a role in the choreography and in the success of the group.

More Ways to Perform

Every Spotlight dancer performs as part of the company, but dancers may also have opportunities to participate in additional group numbers, duets, trios, and solos throughout the competition season. These additional pieces give dancers the chance to take on new challenges, work with different groups, and experience even more time on stage.

Ready to Step Into the Spotlight?

Spotlight auditions are held before the start of each season, and that’s when most dancers join the company. Once the season begins, Spotlight is generally closed to new members because our dancers are already working together on choreography and performances.

New to Center Stage? Reach out anyway! Depending on where we are in the season and what Spotlight is currently working on, we may be able to find a way for your dancer to join us.
